Effects of Copper on Biodegradation of Selected Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals

Abstract: The effects of copper on microbial degradation of three common endocrine disruptors (EDs) (bisphenol A, BPA, 17 beta-estradiol, E2, and 17 alpha-ethynylestradiol, EE2) were investigated. Results show that the presence of copper appeared to be considerably inhibitory to the biodegradation of EDs in the order of E2 > BPA > EE2, and the effects increased with the rising copper concentration. This result from the biomass reduction and the changes of microbial community structure due to the addition of copper. Difference of microorganisms in the absence and presence of copper was characterized by transmission electron microscope. This study may provide important insights into the potential mechanisms of heavy metal influencing the biodegradation of organic matters in co-contaminated system.

摘要: 研究重金属-有机物复合污染体系中, Cu( Ⅱ) 对 3 种常见的有机 内分泌干扰物( EDs) 双酚 A( BPA) 、17 β雌二醇( E2) 和 17 α乙炔基雌二醇( EE2) 生物降解的影响。研究表明Cu(Ⅱ) 抑制 EDs 的降解, 抑制作用 E2 > BPA > EE2, 且随着 Cu(Ⅱ) 浓度增加影响越显著。其原因是 Cu(Ⅱ) 影响体系中微生物的数量和群落结构。透射电镜可以观察到 Cu(Ⅱ) 对微生物细胞的影响。该研究对揭示复合污染体系中重金属对有机物降解的影响机理具有重要意义。
