Based on the methodology guidelines of IPCC, a city-scale methane emission inventory for Beijing in 1999 was established. The statistical data were derived from newly intensive survey and updated emission factors were referenced. Results showed that the total methane emissions were 296.29 Gg. The main sources were municipal solid waste and fossil fuel, which produced 161.60 Gg and 96.08 Gg of methane emissions, accounting for 54.6% and 32.4% of total emissions respectively. The spatial distributions of methane emission source strengths were also obtained.

The Anterior Pagoda neuron (AP) is one of the largest neurons in the leech nervous system. It receives multiple sensory inputs. The physiological function of AP is unknown. With the combination of intra-and extra-cellular electrophysiological recording methods, it is suggested that AP neuron modulates the membrane potential of multiple muscle cells in the contralateral body wall.

Lithological characteristics, sedimentary structure, mass-specific magnetic susceptibility and frequency-dependent magnetic susceptibility studies and correlation to the δ18O curve of DSDP607 & V30-97 show that loess began to deposit on the terrace of the Yellow River about 1.20 Ma B P, and passed thirteen climatic changes from drier and cooler to warmer and wetter later. The turn of sedimentation from alluvium to loess, an event of transformation from accumulation to down-cut of the Yellow River, indicates a sharp tectonic uplift occurred around 1.2 Ma B P.

The Mesoproterozoic mafic dyke swarms are extensively distributed in the central North China Craton(NCC), which are not deformed and metamorphic, emplacing the pre-existed fractures, so the dyke swarms become the conspicuous marks to reconstruct the Mesoproterozoic tectonic stress field of the central NCC. The mafic dykes in the northern block are transtensional while the dykes in the central and southern blocks are extensional. The Mesoproterozoic tectonic stress field could be simulated on the analysis of the distribution and mechanical origin of the Mesoproterozoic mafic dyke swarms in the central NCC. The simulation result shows that the mafic dyke swarms were formed in the extensional tectonic setting in the NCC in the Mesoproterozoic time, which are related to the extension of the Mesoproterozoic Yanliao-Zhongtiao aulacogens cross the central NCC.

Taowan Conglomerate was formed with underwater seismism at early Cambrian period and consists of Shattering sedimentary rock, Tsunami rock, Seismic turbidite and Seismic volcanic rock. The Shattering sedimentary rock consists of folded rock, cracked rock and autobreccia. The Seismic turbidite is located in the south of Luonan Ductile Shear Zone and is called the narrow Taowan Conglomerate. Contrarily the broad Taowan Conglomerate consists of Shattering sedimentary rock, Tsunami rock located in the north of the Zone. The seismic sequence of Shattering sedimentary rock-Tsunami rock-Seismic turbidite-Seismic volcanic rock-Normal sedimentary rock was first found in Luonan Shanxi and is rare among the reported examples about it, so it is a good example and offers power evidences to study how the southern marginal basin of Huabei plate transferred to Qinling orogenic belt.

Jiyang depression is a field where nonhydrocarbon is rich. These resources have close relation with the activities of the volcanos. At the same time, the activities of volcanos have deep contact with the activities of the faults. The growth of the faults in Jiyang depression is great. By the research of the index number of the faults growth and the other researches, NW direction faults are the most ones in Mesozoic, NW and NE and approximately EW directions all exist in Cenozoic. The above reflects the whole geotectonic background that sinistral shearing stress field exists in Mesozoic, but dextral shearing stress field exists in Cenozoic.

Stoneley wave is a kind of guide waves propagating along the liquid-solid interface in well. When a sonic beam strikes the surface of a thick plate immersed in a liquid, a Stoneley wave is generated. Stoneley wave approach is applied on analysis of well logging more and more widely in recent ten years with the introduction of advanced analysis methods for component waves from full-waveform array acoustic log data. The spectrum of Stoneley waves are used to identify the fractured zones and quantitatively calculate the fracture parameters of reservoirs, especially to evaluate the validity of fractures at fracture-type complex reservoir.

Kongxi buried hill shows following features in the seismic profiles: the structures are asymmetric. There is flexural syncline on the east side and a monocline on the west side. Asymmetric repetition of stratigraphic units is present in the drill wells and the dips of beds and faults are gentle. The Permo-Carboniferous system of both sides almost lie in the same slope and the events of Cambrian or upper Proterozoic are continuous from east to west. The phenomenas suggest that Kongxi buried hill could be a thrust belt been traced which consists of reverse faults. The imbricate faults mainly effect Pre-Jurassic strata. There are obvious angular unconformity between Jurassic-Cretaceous system and Paleozoic involved deformation of thrust. The thrust front in some place has cut off the beds of Jurassic-Cretaceous system. The structural style of the thrust structure changes along the strike of the Kongxi buried hill.

Pilsenite is a rare mineral and its information is deficient. The first found pilsenite in China is in Gaozhuang, Henan province. Pilsenite, associated with pyrrhotite, pyrite, hessite, gold, produced in pyrrhotite-polymetallic stage. Three bismuth-tellurides produced in Gaozhuang are well concordant with the standard pilsenite in composition, and other three are different from any of known bismuth-tellurium minerals. Single crystal diffraction were made on a larger mineral grain of pilsenite. Au growth and decline together with Bi and Te in ores and wall-rocks, which suggests that Bi and Te play a important role in migration and enrichment of Au.

Two temporal satellite images were used for vegetation mapping of Wolong nature reserve.Through overlay analysis of the vegetation maps and DEM data, the authors studied the distribution pattern variation of different vegetation types along the topographic gradients. The Study resulted that: (1) The extensive deforestation activity beginning at medium 1960's made intensively impact on the vegetation distribution pattern, and the aftereffect can be distinguished clearly even in medium 1980's. (2) The productive afforestation during timber production period from medium 1960's to 1970's and the continually protective afforestation after the setting up of the nature reserve were the primary causes of the significant variation for vegetation distribution pattern along topographic gradients during the study period. Furthermore, natural recovery process also gave an impulse to the pattern changing. (3) Some obvious phenomena of human impact on natural vegetation can also be watched in our working area. Decreasing of coniferous forest and broad-leaved forest with the simultaneous increasing of shrub reflected the type and spatial characteristics of human disturbance activities in working area. The related management department should consider the above problems more seriously.

Light microtechnique and SA-β-galactosidase method was used to study the effects of super-high-concentration of glucose on the senescence of human diploid fibroblast 2BS cells, ROS and the membrane potential of mitochondria during this process were measured. Our results showed that 200 mmol/L of glucose inhibited the growth of 2BS cells, led to the changes of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and decrease of mitochondrial membrane potential, and caused senescence of 2BS cells rapidly. It supports the hypothesis of oxidative damage of senescence. Moreover it is a better system for the study of the effects of ROS during the process of replicative senescence.

Giant panda is an indigenous and endangered species in China. It was discussed that the utilization of cell wall of bamboo by giant panda at the morphological viewpoint. The structure of cell wall of Fargesia shoot in both food and feces of giant panda was studied by the ultrathin sectioning and electron microscope. The results showed that the morphological change of the cell wall of Fargesia occurred through giant panda's alimentary canal. The cell wall became thinner, and the rupture and loss of primary and secondary wall was observed. Therefore, it showed that giant panda has the ability to digest part of components of cell wall, such as pectin and semicellulose, etc. Furthermore, it is possible that giant panda can digest a little cellulose. The morphological method used in this study is a new idea for nutrition research. The ability of utilization of cell wall of bamboo by giant panda is unique in carnivore. It is adaptation to its phytophage.

AMORE 2001 has successfully investigated the Gakkel Ridge and Arctic ocean in vicinity of its geological and geophysical nature, as well as the nature of sea ice and biology in this area. The preliminary onboard petrology and bathymetry results show that the mantle beneath the Gakkel ridge with low temperature has only encountered very low degree partial melting during the spreading and there is no any direct relationship between the crust nature and the spreading rate along the Gakkel ridge in any simple petrologic way. Mantle temperature and fracture zone density also play a major role on the crust nature, besides spreading rate.
