Abstract: The Characteristics of heavy metals in the sediment of 4 "key rivers" in Hong Kong have been studied. The potential ecological hazards have been assessed using Hakanson Index. The results show that the contamination level of sediments in Hong Kong rivers are from light to moderate. The main factor caused ecological hazard is cadmium, following by copper, lead, zinc, chromium.

Key words: heavy metals contamination, ecological hazard, Hakanson Index, Hong Kong
