Preliminary Investigation on Surface Deformation Characteristics of the Ms 7.1 Earthquake in Wushi County, Aksu Prefecture, Xinjiang, on January 23, 2024

An Ms 7.1 earthquake struck Wushi County in Aksu Prefecture, Xinjiang at 02:09:05 on January 23, 2024. We conducted a preliminary investigation into the surface deformation characteristics at the epicenter (41.26°N, 78.63°E) and adjacent areas. The observation results show that the fault which triggered the earthquake was not widely exposed in the epicenter area. The primary surface deformations observed are mainly tensional fractures, with locally observed compression bulges, scarps and sand liquefaction. The earthquake caused approximately 5 cm of vertical displacement. The fracture zone composed of multiple tensional fractures destroyed roads, mountains and houses, and led to collapses and landslides in mountainous areas. Based on our field investigation, focal mechanism solution and aftershock distribution, it is concluded that the seismogenic structure of the earthquake is the eastern segment of Maidan fault. The future earthquake risk in this region remains high. Considering the potential risks associated with surface deformation, we recommend that local government strengthen the earthquake resistance capacity of building in pastoral areas and enhance the investigation and management of secondary geological hazards.

Fractal theory and method is applied to analyze the characteristics of low carbon economy connectivity
of Jing-Jin-Ji urban agglomeration. Firstly, a “full carbon emission” accounting model is established to calculate
the resource consumption and pollution emissions of a single city in Jing-Jin-Ji urban agglomeration in the process
of social and economic development. Secondly, the low carbon economic connectivity gravity model and the
fractal dimension measurement model are set up to calculate and evaluate the low carbon economic connectivity
which centered on Beijing and Tianjin in 2006–2016. There are three main factors in the connectivity gravity
model: the population support, GDP output and the road bear of every unit CO
2
emission. Furthermore, in order to
compare and analyze the difference between the single-point radiation source and the double-point source
radiation, the superposition effect of the “Jing-Jin” twin-city radiation is calculated according the principle of
source superposition. Thirdly, in order to find out the law of the influence of the spatial distribution of single-point
radiation connection intensity on the fractal dimension of the source superposition, the representative years are
selected to carry out spatial analysis of low carbon economic connectivity based on the tool of ArcGIS. Finally,
Xiong’an New Area is treated as the the third radiation center point to calculate and analyze the three-point source
radiation superposition. The fractal dimension calculation and analysis results show that in 2006—2016, the low
carbon economic connectivity of the Jing-Jin-Ji urban agglomeration have an inverted U-shaped distribution and
the peak appears in 2012, which reflect that Beijing and Tianjin had the best combination of low-carbon economy
radiation in the urban agglomeration in 2012. The differences of the fractal dimension of low-carbon economic
connectivity are very large between Beijing as the central radiation source and Tianjin as the central radiation
source in 2007 and 2014, and the inversion of the fractal dimension appears after the dual source superposition, that
is the fractal dimension after superposition is lower than the one with higher radiation capacity in a single source,
which means that the twin-city linkage is in low effect. The spatial analysis results of low carbon economic
connectivity based on ArcGIS show that in 2012, the results of the “Jing-Jin” twin-city radiation low-carbon
economic connectivity source superposition shows a reasonable spatial distribution—gradient order and distinct
layers, which is the main reason for the peak value of fractal dimension. When Xiong’an New Area is added as the
third central radiation source, the fractal dimension of the low carbon economic connectivity of the Jing-Jin-Ji
urban agglomeration can be significantly improved.

A full carbon emission calculation method is proposed, whose accounts include energy consumption carbon emission, potential carbon consumption of biomass resource consumption, and potential carbon consumption of waste emission. The solar emergy is used as a tool of the same normalized dimension for calculating the amount of full carbon emission. Based on the full carbon emission calculation, population carrying capacity of one unit carbon emission, economic output of one unit carbon emission, and per capita disposable income of one unit carbon emission are considered into one package to construct an index to evaluate the carbon efficiency and development coordination level of a region, and the index is named carbon emission performance integrated index. Taking Beijing and Chongqing as examples, an assessment is made from 2001 to 2011 with the result that the proportion of energy consumption carbon emission in the full carbon emission of the two cities is raised continuously, which indicates that even in the view of full carbon emission, energy consumption is still the main factor affecting carbon emission; however, the effects from modes of both life and production on carbon emission also cannot be neglected. Compared with the traditional carbon efficiency evaluation with only energy carbon emission and carbon production rate considered, the carbon integrated performance evaluation based on “full carbon emission calculation” can fairly and objectively reflect carbon performance of a region, thus it provides a scientific method to identify the responsibility of regional carbon emission reduction.

In order to avoid some shortages of traditional ecological footprint model, the authors proposed an integrated model by using emergy theory, which is named as Emergy-Ecological Footprint Integrated Model. In ecological carrying capacity calculation, the proposed model adds the carrying capacity of actual product output and virtual product supply based on material input-output theory and people ’s innovation. In ecological footprint calculation, the proposed model considers waste ecological footprint into evaluation system. Finally, the proposed model is applied in Tianjin eco-city evaluation from 2001 to 2008. The calculating result shows that the ecological carrying capacity is higher than ecological footprint, and ecological surplus is in rising tendency which expresses that Tianj in is in sustainable state.

Fractal method is introduced into the study of regional economy based on the analysis of human-environment complex system in western China. The spatial fractal characteristics are determined by the results from the economic relation intensity model. The economic relation intensities amongst different cities and counties in the Aikesu area are calculated and spatial distributions are analyzed, compared with the fundamental corresponding characteristics of self-affine fractal, thus providing guidance for the regional planning.
